Career overview

The DevOps Lead runs the DevOps practice for a perimeter: team, roadmap, standards, hiring and stakeholder alignment. They keep one foot in the technology and one in delivery management, arbitrating priorities between feature velocity and platform health. It is the natural management step after a senior DevOps career, leading to DevOps Architect or Engineering Manager.

Main responsibilities

  • Coordinate operations across teams and geographies
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines
  • Describe infrastructure as code and version it
  • Align stakeholders and report progress
  • Mentor junior team members and review their work
  • Run steering committees and project rituals
  • Prepare and execute change requests in production
  • Lead incident resolution and post-mortem analysis
  • Keep technical documentation up to date
  • Own the technical roadmap of the perimeter
