Career overview

The LAN/WAN Engineer builds the wired backbone of the organisation: campus and data-centre LANs, inter-site WAN links, routing protocols, segmentation and interconnections. They design for performance, redundancy and security, and troubleshoot the latency, packet loss and routing issues that affect every other IT service. It is a core networking role and a natural path toward SD-WAN and network architecture.

Main responsibilities

  • Design LAN, WAN and interconnection architectures
  • Configure switches, routers, VLANs and Wi-Fi
  • Troubleshoot latency, packet loss and routing issues
  • Manage firewall rules, VPN and network segmentation
  • Monitor platform health, alerts and dashboards
  • Prepare and execute change requests in production
  • Keep technical documentation up to date
  • Lead incident resolution and post-mortem analysis
  • Follow capacity, performance and resource usage
  • Coordinate with software vendors and third parties
